LFHHS  member Keith Shackleton has shared this extract from the 1911 Census for which contains some very unusual entries!

The Head of Household who filled in the form was the brother of Keith's Great Grandfather, Henry Shackleton, who was also a hairdresser in Burnley.

It would seem that John Shackleton misunderstood the instructions and instead of reporting those members of the family who were present on Census day, reported his whole family, wherever they were -Alice - a medical missionary in China and William, Arthur and Ethel who were all dead!!! What a gem!!!! Thanks for sharing Keith

The most unusual 1911 census return? 

In our travels through the 1911 census, we found this little treasure: a census return that tells the story of Roger the Airedale Terrier. 

Here is 'watchdog' Roger with the rest of the Little family in Dulwich, London. 

Head of the household, James Little, recorded the following charming details: 

'Incidentally, we have an Airedale Terrier. I do not know whether particulars are required, but in case you want them here they are!': 

 Name: Roger 
Age: 5 years old 
Children: ? but something over 100 
Occupation: watchdog 
Industry connected with: looking after house 
Employed or working on own account: on own account 
Whether working at home: at home and outside 
Birthplace: Keighley, Yorkshire

Conference Background and Aims

On the eve of the centenary of the First World War interest in the conflict has grown - as have debates over local identities, recruitment, the war effort, memorialisation, and the historical sources. 

As home to many Pals battalions, and a focus of Lord Derby's recruitment efforts, Lancashire is arguably at the heart of these matters. Moreover as the result of the successful Preston City Council bid to refurbish the town memorial, and extensive new research into rarely seen film, new and fascinating evidence of the war and its impact is now coming to light. 

Of interest to academic researchers, professionals in the heritage and educational sectors and the interested amateur, Finding Identities will include both keynote speakers, and opportunities to visit the Harris Museum and the newly restored Preston Cenotaph; the recently opened First World War gallery in the Museum of Lancashire and the Lancashire Infantry Museum at Fulwood Barracks.
