Thanks to our colleagues at Aberdeen & North-East Scotland Family History Society who posted this on Facebook . Thought I should share it with you!!!!! <click> for large image Posted on the Society Forum by Shaun O'Hara Within the next four weeks it is a busy time for the society with the 40th Anniversary show and Society's Annual Dinner. Towards the middle of October the Irish Ancestry Group are organising a one day conference on "Tracking Your Irish Ancestors" which is part of the celebration of the society 40th anniversary. The theme of "Tracking Your Irish Ancestors" is based on following in the footsteps of your ancestors. Where ever our ancestors moved to be it England, USA, Australia or the many other places in the world, to them it was a voyage of discovery. Like them we can travel on a voyage of discovery by learning about and following their footsteps. The one day conference will give you some of the tools needed to start on your journey. Posted by Tony Foster on the Society Forum The LFHHS received the following:- The North West Film Archive at Manchester Metropolitan University is pleased to announce A Right Royal Tour of Lancashire a centenary reflection. These special shows are part of a BFI funded project, Pennine Lancashire: a reel history. The screenings will take place at the following venues; Gallery Oldham 19/9/13 at 7.30pm. Bolton Central Library Wednesday 9/10/13 at 2pm. The show is a compilation of material from the local cinema newsreels of the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Lancashire over an eight day period in July 1913. Using contemporary material to sketch Lancashire life, we will look at the industries and lives of the people of the County, before following the Royal couple as they visit Pilkington's Glass works St Helens, Horrockses Mill Preston, Blackpool, Colne, Burnley and Bacup, before heading on to Rochdale, Chorley, Bolton, Middleton, Atherton and Leigh, and finishing in Manchester on the final day of the tour. Set against a time of national tension, and with the activities of the suffrage movement and wider global politics in the minds of many, the King and Queen covered 220 miles on an extensive visit to over 30 towns and cities to find out more about the people of this important County which was a powerhouse of the Empire. Join the cheering crowds as they thronged the decorated streets to have a glimpse of the King and Queen on their first tour of the area since the Coronation in 1911. The Archive's Service Manager Marion Hewitt said, "We are so pleased to have been able to preserve these rare and fragile early films. Showing them in the same towns exactly 100 years later will bring them right back to where they belong they are truly local films for local people." Emma Heslewood is Curator of History at the Harris Museum Preston, and has generously shared her extensive research into the tour. She said "The 1913 Royal visit to Lancashire was a remarkable public event which was widely documented on film. These films provide a rare insight into Lancashire and its people, who enthusiastically greeted the Royal couple, only a year before the outbreak of the First World War." The screenings will be presented by the Archive's Collections Assistant Geoff Senior. For further information, interview, and footage contact Geoff Senior on 0161 247 3097.
