The following website is really useful for various words or abbreviations found in old documents. The website includes Trades, Medical terms, Abbreviations, Latin, an easy converter from Regnal years to the normal calendar date ---- and more. Just have a look -- I think it's really good.

With the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War this summer, McMaster University, Hamilton Ontario  is finishing a massive project to digitize more than 1,350 trench maps and 580 photos from France and Belgium 


There are also more than 340 First World War recruitment posters and dozens of copies of sheet music for war songs."

The university's holdings became internationally renowned when the university purchased the $120,000 Western Front collection of English historian Peter Chasseaud.

So far, 500 maps and 600 photos are available at library.mcmaster.ca/maps/ww1/home.htm

Version 4.0 of Ancestral Sources Now Available

For those who don't know it, Ancestral Sources is a very useful application that was designed by Family Historian user, 

Nick Walker, to be used in conjunction with Family Historian, to make it easier to enter data from various source documents. When you enter data from a source document, you typically want to record multiple facts and link these back to a Source record representing the source document, using source citations. 

Ancestral Sources makes the whole process much easier. The new version now supports the entry of burial/cremation records and death records. This is in addition to support for census, baptism and marriages records that were already available in the previous version.

The program is free but the author does appreciate donations which can be made from within the application.

Anyone with Welsh ancestors may find the following old Welsh newspapers website useful.

Welsh Newspapers Online - http://welshnewspapers.llgc.org.uk/

It's free and there are loads of local newspapers on there --- earliest date 1804 -- latest date 1919 (depending on the publication)

Apart from searching the site for your Welsh ancestors it is also worth using the site to search for non-Welsh ancestors. 

The GRONI website for family history research was launched recently, at  http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/family-history 

A new online service for searching family history is now available on nidirect. 

It enables you to view various levels of information by using credits. 

Until now, family records could only be accessed in the public search room in the General Register Office for Northern Ireland (GRONI) in Belfast.

There are some data protection restrictions and, unfortunately, some teething problems which I hope will be sorted out quickly.
