News from LFHHS Chorley Family History Research Centre

Computer Club

We are starting a Family History Computer Club which will be open to all members of the Lancashire Family History and Heraldry Society.

It will be held at the LFHHS Chorley Family History Research Centre at Astley Farmhouse in Chorley on the 3rd Monday of the month starting on Monday 21st September.

This will be a self help group where we will aim to help each other to make the best use our computers in Family History. We will be talking about things like software, websites, hints and tips that will help us with our research.

Computers will be available as well as facilities to use your own.

We will be starting at 7.30pm and aim to finish about 9.30pm.

The cost will be £2.50 per evening,

We are extending our opening times - On the 2nd Wednesday of each month we will be staying open from 10am until 7.30pm.

COMMONWEALTH WAR GRAVES COMMISSION LAUNCHES NEW ONLINE RESOURCES TO COMMEMORATE VJ DAY

The digitised records cover British, Irish and Commonwealth casualties from the Second World War, together with records for most other nationals commemorated at CWGC sites: this includes the records for German soldiers. The release of the CWGC's Second World War records follows the successful release of the First World War archive in August 2014.

The documents give a unique insight into the process of commemoration undertaken by the armed forces and the CWGC during and after the war, and include details of personal headstone inscriptions, date of death, rank, regiment and even some documents which show the journey of the deceased to their final resting place. The records are freely available to the public through the CWGC website at www.cwgc.org

Andrew Fetherston, the CWGC's Archivist and Records Manager, said: "The release of our Second World War archive online opens a new avenue for members of the public to investigate and remember the individuals we commemorate."

"With the addition of these documents, alongside records relating to non-Commonwealth casualties buried in various sites around the world, it will now be possible, for the first time, to see the original records of all 1.7 million individuals the Commission commemorates."

"The archive will greatly enhance the experience of searching the CWGC's records and will mean that millions of people across the Commonwealth could discover more about their relatives who fought and died during the Second World War."

The CWGC is hosting a live Q&A session across the organisation's Twitter and Facebook platforms on 17 August at midday to give the public the opportunity to ask questions and receive tips on how to get the most out of the archived documents. To take part people simply need to tweet their question to @CWGC using the hashtag #CWGCarchive or post it on the timeline at www.facebook.com/commonwealthwargravescommission

Serendipity, fortuosity, or just very good luck?

Monday 20 July 2015 brought through the doors of the LFHHS Chorley Family History Research Centre a father and daughter from New South Wales, Australia.

Craig and Kylie had decided to visit the UK on the trail of their Ancestors. Already having researched enough to know that Brinscall was one of their places of interest, and having books on Brinscall Moors which actually names their Briggs family in 1880, they were looking for assistance to discover more. Fortunately they had also carried out internet searches to find valuable resources to aid them, so here they were, in our Research Centre - the right place at the right time!

By pure serendipity, not only was Chorley Branch member Jenny on volunteer duty this day, but she was free to help. After some time together, and finding useful information and records by using the resources at the Research Centre, Craig and Kylie left for lunch, seemingly very happy that they had learnt more, evidently so as they returned within the hour.

Although Jenny didn’t have intimate knowledge of the Brinscall area she does have a friend there, so, with the blessing of our visitors, a telephone call was made to enquire if they knew anyone of the name in the village.

Imagine the amazement when it was pronounced that a neighbour certainly was of the same name, so a hastily despatched friend went forth to investigate. It wasn’t long before a call came in from Brinscall, and an animated conversation between Kylie and Brinscall based Gordon resulted in an invitation to visit the following day.

The meeting went exceptionally well, confirming that all were related. Gordon’s Grandfather Thomas is the brother of Craig’s Great Grandmother Elizabeth.

Craig and Kylie now have contact with other cousins through Gordon, so long may their research and new relationships continue.

Permission has been granted by all parties to pass on their story and photos.
