I write to make all members aware of the danger of losing one of the most important archive collections in Lancashire 

The Hulton Archive was deposited with Lancashire Archives in 1947; its current owner now wishes to sell it and it will go to auction (and probably the USA) if £95,000 cannot be raised to purchase it by the end of November 2014. The Friends of Lancashire Archives, of which I am Treasurer, are attempting to raise this to save this collection. 

The documents in the Archive contains over a 1,000 documents which cover the period 1189 to 1947 and refelect the vast influence this important family had throughout Lancashire and beyond. The papers cover churches, heraldry, genealogy, turnpike roads canals, railways, mining, the Peterloo Massacre and much much more. The National School Admission Registers & Log-Books 1870-1914 collection has not been officially launched yet at Findmypast, but the records are online 

School registers / log books are available for 12 counties so far: Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Cheshire, Devon, Glamorganshire, Hertfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Lancashire, Middlesex, Surrey and Wiltshire. 

Information available for each child typically includes their date of birth, date of admission, fees paid, and father's name, address and occupation.

From Astley Hall, Chorley 

Great News!

Astley Hall is to receive £5,000 from the Sustainable Improvement Fund held by Museum Development North West. The money will be used to explore the story of the servants of Astley Hall in the 1850's.




We are also grateful to the Chorley Branch of the Lancashire Family History and Heraldry Society who have assisted with the research. The photograph shows the external bell system that was situated in the inner courtyard, image courtesy of the Lancashire Records Office.

Magic Lantern Tales – Ian McMillan and Ian Beesley bring stories of WW1 to the Harris Library & Museum Preston

Using a real magic lantern projector, poet & broadcaster Ian McMillan and documentary photographer Ian Beesley tell a story of the First World War from the point of view of men who survived it and lived on to old age and a changing world. Here too are the tales of women who worked in the factories that oiled the wheels of war.

We often view war as a series of huge historical sweeps and this show reminds us that war is made by people who each have their own narrative of what happened.

Ian & Ian also explore the culture of magic lantern shows - from the natural world to engineering and from small disasters to Empire.

Lancashire County Council's Cultural Services in partnership with Spot On Lancashire, are delighted to bring this magical performance to the Harris Library & Museum on Friday 26th September at 8pm.

All burial records for Blackburn with Darwen now available on Deceased Online 

• All burial and cremation records for the large South Lancashire local authority area of Blackburn with Darwen have been added to www.deceasedonline.com
• The new collection includes nearly 350,000 individual burial and cremation records comprising nearly 1 million data items including:
  • digital scans of original burial and cremation registers
  • details of all interments in each grave
  • maps indicating the cemetery section location for each grave
• Blackburn and Darwen was a thriving industrial area, world-renowned for cotton and textile production as well as engineering, brewing, mining and other industries throughout the late 18th and 19th centuries.
