Brief Notes taken at the 1939 Registration Records Talk

Limitations of the Records:
Recorded 98.3% of the population on 29 Sept 1939. Others were added as necessary into supplementary books, which are not available.
All have been ‘hand’ checked for accuracy, however may still have errors.
Limited to England and Wales.Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own arrangements, though Northern Ireland records have been ‘Lost’.
Information drawn was used to supply Wartime Ration Books and provided the base for setting up the National Health Service.
Introduced via the National Registration Act 1939, establishing ID Cards, used until 1952.
Census every 10 years:
1921 Only available in 2021
1931 Destroyed by fire in 1942
1941 Not taken because of War
1951 Only available in 2051
The Registration records acts as a census substitute for these periods.
The Records contain: Address, Full Name, Date of Birth, Marital Status, Individual Occupation, additional
information.
It’s a living, dynamic project, subject to change with continuous new releases, errors being fixed,
‘Closed’ records are opened or made available when the person listed is proved to have died or after 100 years
and 1 day after their birth. FMP uses Death Records to confirm.
Guidance for Searching:
Searches in all fields and in combinations – places, names, dates, etc.
Direct Links to other FMP records, Eg: Maps and available Local History ‘Info Graphics’;
Photographs via Trinity Mirror; Newspapers and related articles; Electoral Rolls, Prison, Military records, Occupation descriptions, Kinder Transport Records, Prisoners of War, Merchant Navy, Regimental Attestations, etc, etc.
