Would you like to know at which church your ancestors married?

If your ancestors were married in a Church the Lancashire BMD results page tells you which church.

See if the marriage register images or transcriptions are available by:-

Checking the holdings at LFHHS Family History Research Centres at Chorley or Oswaldtwistle
or
go to Ancestry, FamilySearch, local Online Parish Clerks, FreeREG or other genealogical websites

Save the cost of purchasing a certificate from the GRO.

This is a sweeping generalisation that may be mis-leading as it does not apply universally.
For marriages between 1837 and 1898, the church is named ONLY if it is of the Church of England (except for Quakers and Jews).
Marriages were performed in non-Anglican churches and chapels if they were licensed and IF the Registrar attended. These marriages are recorded under the civil law in the Registrar's registers and appear in LancsBMD as Registrar marriages as "Registrar or Registrar Attended" marriages. There MIGHT be a separate religious register.
From 1898, non-Anglican churches could have an Authorised Person (AP) appointed to act in the place of the Registrar. The AP kept registers like the Anglican clergy and these are indexed on LancsBMD as AP Marriages with the name of the church or chapel. Many Free Churches adopted this facility quite early, but Catholic churches were slow to take it up with only a few having APs before the 1960s.
